When Does a Doodle Become an Art Piece?

Of all the dozen or so museums Will and I saw in Europe last month, the exhibit that keeps coming up is one that neither of us liked.  At all.

At the Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin we saw the exhibit Secret Universe, the works of Horst Ademeit.

Each day of Ademeit’s life, he would take a Polaroid of something that bothered him about the world and record his thoughts and complaints all over the edges.  He would number them, so he could keep track.

Only after Ademeit’s death, as the exhibit related, was his “body of work was discovered.” This body of work — these thousands of Polaroids lined were up, one by one, in numerical order forming a grid stretching through three rooms.

The ramblings of a disturbed man set out in the meticulous fashion in which he formed them for all to see.  This obsessive tracking of each day is something we have come to associate with psychosis or other mental illness.

Though we didn’t like the exhibit especially, we are still talking about.  It strikes me now as a wonderful glimpse into the pain of what it is to be human.  At least this man had an outlet for all the complaints that many of us swallow in the effort to be gracious human beings!

But at the same time, I don’t know if it’s art.  I wonder if perhaps it would be better characterized as anthropology.

But when a doodle become an art piece?  When you have thousands of them lined up side by side? Continue Reading

What if he doesn’t like me? I mean I’d rather wait until he calls me and asks me out. If he would.

Hi!  I am going to call Justin and talk him into going out with Erica.  Not that he needs any persuasion, but you know what I mean.

So then Erica reads this and decides that she’s going to call Andy and do the same for me.  I don’t know.  What if he doesn’t like me?  I mean I’d rather wait until he calls me and asks me out.  If he would.

Also Erica asked me what I would do if both Andy and Andrew called me up on the same day and asked if I would go out with them.  What would I do?  I can’t two-time.  It’s not going to happen, though.

Becky moved yesterday.

Looking back I see that even in fifth grad I was so young and inexperienced. Not that I’m experienced now, but…..I’m so different now.

You know, I spent all day cleaning out my closet and now I feel so different. Like I’m clearer or something.

I’m also in a really great mood because I finished my “guy”. See I got a ball of fluff at the fair yesterday. Last night I made him arms and legs and today I glued them on. He’s really cute. I named him “Ball Guy”, but I’m not sure if the name fits.

Let’s review here. You got a ball of fluff, added arms and legs and now are not sure if the name “Ball Guy” fits??? It fits. Take it from me. I have fond memories of “Ball Guy.”

Well today I was supposed to go to Becky’s because she’s moving on the 1st. Anyway I was about to go over there but we got in a stupid fight. It’s so stupid I can’t even tell you. You’d start to laugh. Continue Reading

Beauty and the Beast: Special Edition

Beauty and the Beast is tied in my heart as best Disney movie ever. I decided to get it from Netflix months if not years ago, but was disappointed that the so-called “Special Edition” was the only one I could find and wasn’t available! It remained at the bottom of my queue, and finally emerged at the top last week.

I was so excited! I counted the days before I could set aside a good hour and a half to really relax and admire the wonderful animation, beautiful story and fantastic soundtrack.

All was going along well until this monstrosity came on:

It tuns out that Disney added in a new musical sequence in the 2002 Special Edition of the movie. Be warned, friends, be warned. Do not buy a new version of the movie. I’d argue it’s a reason to keep the old VHS & VCR around–just in case. Continue Reading

I’m sure she has her share of problems, like who should she eat lunch with today.

I hate Andy and Amy. Well, maybe I don’t hate her but I sort of do. I mean I envy her so much. She’s popular and pretty. You know the “p’s”. I swear how I’d love to be in her shoes. Well maybe not. I’m sure she has her share of problems, like who should she eat lunch with today. You know when I was somewhat in her group I was happy. Now I’m back in the same old group. Continue Reading

the truth of the matter is

I had a wonderful 17 days wandering around and having adventures with Will.

I came home, had a whirlwind-back-at-work 4th of July weekend and week after before heading out to Colorado for my grandmother’s postponed memorial and ashes scattering.

I’d never scattered any ashes before.

My grandmother had a computer. It was large and boxy and took up half of the room I used to sleep in with the water bed. She used it to write, as I often use mine to. She never had to use her computer to work.

Whether I’m writing or working or having fun with art, most of the time it’s at the computer. And it’s hard to work at the computer all day, every day. It was hard to come back to a life like that after walking for 6+ hours a day and exploring and swimming when I felt like it. Continue Reading

I hate Andy. He used me. He deliberately led me to believe he liked me.

I hate Andy. He used me. He deliberately led me to believe he liked me. I mean what about that day in Art, when Amanda said he liked me. And all those days ever since when Steve has asked me if I liked Andy. Andy probably hired them to mislead me. I really thought he liked me. I almost liked him. I have no proof that he ever liked me, but really. Two reasons were alot. The reasons are mentioned above. Now Andy goes and likes Amy. I swear! Really! Damn him. I will never let anyone read this diary again.

Fuck Becky. You know she told me her mom would be back by early Sunday night, and that her mom would take us to see Jurassic Park that night. So I called her to ask if she could go. Continue Reading

Germany 2011: A Journey in Photographs

Will and I embarked on a three-country European vacation last month. The first country we visited was Germany where we were hosted by our friends Spencer and Ann Marie. Thank goodness for friends!

The sheer number of amazing museums and other wonderful things to do in and around Berlin was fairly overwhelming, but did not preclude an awesome stay.
