Donuts, Days and a Dream

The other day I asked you all for some feedback to help me entertain you. That is my goal, after all, so please provide feedback if you haven’t already!

One of my readers asked for donuts (doughnuts???). I’m not one to disappoint, but the nature of the web does keep me from really, and truly, handing you all a donut.

I had a dream sometime ago that I started a vegan-donut-selling business. This is strange because I am staunchly not vegan and I don’t eat too many donuts. Talking about donuts sure makes me want a donut, though. Even a vegan one. They’re actually really good–you don’t miss the animal fat at all. Subrosa, the coffee shop a block away, has vegan donuts. Maybe I should have a donut for lunch.

In my dream, I would have to get up really early to deliver donuts to bars. Bars selling vegan donuts! And in the morning!

I was supposed to meet my best friend g. at one of these bars, and I think I was late. The dream gets hazy, but I remember that we brought a twelve pack of beer into the bar. A bar that serves donuts and lets you BYOB! That’s when I knew I was dreaming.

I do miss Alice Horton's chracter, but I don't miss all that donut eating on the show! It always made me hungry. Strangely enough, it was one of the rare occassions when those characters would actually eat.

Before Frances Reid (the actress that played Alice Horton on Days of Our Lives) passed away last year, we had to watch a lot of donut eating on the show. I looked for awhile for a good clip of them eating some donuts, but as usual, most Days of Our Lives clips have a lot of talking and very little action.

I did find the official Alice Horton donut recipe, courtesy of alicesfamilytree.com, a website that is in dire need of updating. Lots of people have died, administrator of alicesfamilytree.com, and some have been born too.

I was looking for a dessert to make this weekend…this might be the one!

Here Alice carries donuts around town in a basket. What a life! She would have been a good vegan donut business owner.

Ingredients:

2 eggs
1 cup of sugar
1 cup of milk
5 tablespoons melted shortening
1-teaspoon vanilla extract
4 cups all-purpose flour, sifted before measuring
4 teaspoons baking powder
½-teaspoon salt
1 stick butter, melted
Cinnamon Sugar

In a large bowl, beat the eggs until foamy. Gradually add sugar, beating constantly.
Stir in milk, shortening and vanilla.

Sift together flour, baking powder and salt.
Add to the wet ingredients, mixing well.
Cover and chill the dough for 30 minutes to one
hour for easier handling.

Preheat the oven to 450 degrees. Spray baking sheet with vegetable cooking spray.

Roll out or pat the dough on a lightly floured board to a half inch thickness. Cut with a doughnut cutter. Place the doughnuts and holes on
the baking sheet, about one inch apart. Bake for 10 – 15 minutes or until golden brown.

Brush each doughnut and doughnut holes with melted butter and roll in Cinnamon Sugar to coat all sides.

Makes about 36 doughnuts.

Cinnamon Sugar:

1 cup of sugar
1 teaspoon of cinnamon
In a small bowl, combine the sugar and cinnamon, blending well.
