the thing about smoking

is that when you’re a smoker everyone knows.

they can smell it, they see it…you can’t go four hours without a cigarette!! Everyone knows.

but you know…we all have addictions. Alcohol. Sex. Chocolate. Video games!

So what’s the big deal?!

Cancer?!

A macrobiotic diet has been known to cure cancer. So I’m cool. I gotta plan. What’s yours?

  1. so your diet is going to stop all the gross aspects of smoking? it’s going to make your teeth whiter, your breath smell better, your clothes smell fresh, your lung capacity increase, your physical exertion ability increase, and your chances of cancer decrease?

wow – sounds like a miracle. or it sounds like a lameass excuse. hmm.. I think it’s the 2nd one.

  3. You’re right that we’re all addicted to something, but that doesn’t mean we can give up and stop caring about the abuse we inflict on ourselves (not just physically, but emotionally) or stop trying to do better.

There is no easy out. As nice as a macrobiotic diet may be (or any other diet for that matter) it’s not a magic wand, my love. It can’t undo years of damage in one fell swoop. Nothing can do that. It will take time – probably a lot of time. And a diet won’t cure the reason for the addiction, either – the compulsion, the mental unrest that leads each of us to comfort ourselves through distraction and stimulation (whether the stimulant is drugs or shopping or food).

You know this. I know you do. And I know you want to quit. I know you hoped it would be easier, and I’m so sorry that it’s not – you know I would do it for you if I could, but I can’t. All I can do is love you, and help you dust yourself off each time you fall down, and let you dust me off when I fall (that last one is the hardest of all).

I love you, and that goes whether or not you quit. That goes if you try and fail a million times. That goes if you throw in the towel. But as one who loves you, I want you to be happy, and I know that even though the smoking feels good, it doesn’t truly make you happy. And you deserve better, my love.

  5. I guess your sarcasm wasn’t appreciated! But really, it’s a hard, hard thing. I’ve tried putting gold stars on my calendar on days I didn’t smoke– that helps. I got the idea from an ex whose parents used to do that on days she didn’t wet the bed. Last week I did a De-tox week, no cigs or alcohol Monday through Friday. And I did it!! So I think I’ll stick with that plan, and try to cut down the cravings I have. I hope you’re doing well!
